Fiqh of Marriage

Printed Material

Synopsis:

In the West, marriage is no longer the only union within which a man and a woman may legitimately enjoy a 'full' relationship. It is just one option amongst a growing catalogue of equally valid possibilities. Hence, it would seem, the official dispensing of the titles 'husband' and 'wife' in favour of the more socially acceptable term 'partner'. Muslims need not be complacent. Where the West leads, the rest of the world inevitably follows. Modern social history provides damning evidence in this regard.

This short workshop will endeavour to reinforce the value of marriage in a Muslim’s life and its hugely positive impact on society. We will briefly look at some of the issues related to marriage such as: The concept of marriage, selecting a suitable spouse, engagements, marriage ceremonies, marriage contracts, forced, arranged and secret marriages, rights and responsibilities of the spouses, polygamy and much more. The content of this “Fiqh of Marriage” workshop will be delivered in light of the Qur'an, Sunna and classical works of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh)
